NEW Future Project
"Texas Food Security Initiative: Growing Sustainable Solutions for the Future"
Mission Statement:
To tackle food insecurity in Texas by providing sustainable food sources, offering immediate relief to those in need, and empowering communities with the tools and knowledge to build long-term food security.
1. Prevalence of Food Insecurity
Texas Ranks High: Texas consistently ranks among the states with the highest rates of food insecurity in the U.S. According to Feeding Texas, about 1 in 8 Texans struggle with food insecurity, which equates to around 4 million people.
Children at Risk: The situation is especially dire for children. Approximately 1 in 5 children in Texas experience food insecurity, which can have long-term impacts on their health, education, and well-being.
2. Causes of Food Insecurity
Poverty: High poverty rates in Texas, especially in rural areas, contribute significantly to food insecurity. Many families cannot afford enough nutritious food on a regular basis.
Unemployment and Underemployment: While Texas has a large workforce, many individuals face low-wage jobs that do not provide enough income to cover basic living expenses, including food.
Lack of Access to Healthy Food: In certain parts of Texas, especially in rural or low-income urban areas, access to grocery stores with fresh, healthy food is limited. This is often referred to as a "food desert.”
